Best explosions in the history of the film industry

What is your favorite part of a movie? Some of you might say romance, and some might say comedy, but I know that it is the action genre that attracts you the most for most of you. And if I go any further into what kind of action, then the two definite answers would be gunfights/fistfights and explosions in movies.

Since so many of you are into explosions seen in movies, let’s talk about the best explosions that you can see in these action movies, the best directors that make them happen, and how do they make them happen on screen.

How are explosions in movies made?

Some explosions are completely real, some completely animated, but most of these explosions result from an excellent mixture of real explosives and computer effects. Let’s see how they make explosions in movies.

Companies like Rowley SFX and Artem specialize in explosions and explosive effects. Most movies rely on special visual effects to create an impressive explosion, but companies like these make things way more real.

The two most important things that go into making a safe and successful explosion for shooting are:

  1. Testing: After determining the range, the number of crew members, and the number of buildings involved, testing is done accordingly. Testing usually takes place extensively, at least one day before the shooting date, so that proper safety measures could be taken. After proper testing, modifications are done, if needed. Without testing, it is stupid to have explosions in movies.
  2. Materials: Materials made or inserted are lightweight and soft so that they do not cause injuries to the cast or the crew members. This is also done to keep building, props, and other pieces of equipment from getting damaged.

Even after taking all these precautions, everything doesn’t need to go by just fine. In the history of the film industry explosion, there have been numerous tragedies; some of these tragedies were fatal. If you search google for ‘Twilight Zone Accident’ or ‘Twilight Zone Crash,’ then you will find many articles, photos, and even videos in which a Bell UH- 1 Iroquois helicopter was crashed in California because of an explosion that the Twilight Zone movie creators made happen for the shoot. This, without any doubt, is on the top of the list of explosions history in Hollywood. The crash resulted in the deaths of an actor and two child actors who were on the ground. The crash also left the six passengers in the helicopter injured.

Famous directors who love the explosion in movies

The one name that comes up to our minds when we talk about movie explosions is Michael Benjamin Bay, the Californian rockstar. I can not say anybody’s name before Michael in case of being in a conversation about the best explosions in movies or even action in Hollywood. The man is the best in the business for all kinds of action that we see on the big screen. Michael’s aesthetics are not only different than the others, but better than the others.

Other than Michael, directors who are famous for explosions in their movies are David Lean, Francis Ford Coppola, Christopher Nolan, George Miller, and Stanley Kubrick. These are some of the many names that have brought us one of the best explosions in movies.

5 Best explosions in movies history

I talked about Michael Bay so much in the previous paragraph that it is only fair that now I should talk about movies that the other directors I mentioned directed. These movies happen to be among the best explosion scenes you can ask for.

Following are the five best explosions in the history of Hollywood:

  • The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957): This movie has shown us one of the biggest explosions in movies. This movie by David Lean won the 1957 Best Picture Award and is widely regarded as the best World War II epic ever. The film’s highlight was the explosion in the climax that sent the titular bridge plummeting to the ground.
  • Apocalypse Now (1979): The explosion in this Francis Ford Coppola directed Vietnam war-era epic showed us one of the most famous explosions in movies and has kept viewers in hallucinatory horror for more than 40 years.
  • The Dark Knight (2008): Yes, here comes the hospital explosion scenes from one of our favorite movies. This movie by Christopher Nolan has left all of us stunned and amazed. This scene was not supposed to be like this. According to the script, the whole hospital was supposed to come down, giving us one of the most famous explosions in movies after clicking and giving one final blow, but what happened was the remote malfunctioned. Now, Heath started banging on the device. One of the bangs worked, the explosion happened, and Heath jumped in surprise.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road (2015): I am sure that Mad Max fans remember the hype when George Miller announced that another sequel is in order nearly after three decades. Giving us one of the biggest explosions in movies, the fourth part fulfilled the expectations fans had and won the Academy Award. The epic explosion scene took many days to set up and was worth it. Real explosives with special effects and CGI enhancements did the work. Seeing Tom Hardy balancing on a pole in a high-speed chase while vehicles were exploding was way too cool. Never saw such explosions in movies.
  • Strangelove (1964): I know it has been more than half a century but do you remember the film’s subtitle? It was How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. There is a reason for that, and that is this movie did not give us just one crazy explosion scene but two explosions that were the greatest of all time. These two were the most epic explosions in movies ever seen. First, Major Kong rides a hydrogen bomb that later gets consumed in a massive mushroom cloud. Second, in the climax, Dr. Strangelove walks again, and while the song “We’ll meet again” gets played in the background, the explosion takes place.

Conclusion

No movie is worth a life, and no movie scene is bigger than people’s good health. High time action and explosions in movies should only occur with all sorts of precautions and beforehand planning. Experts need to be present at all times, and people should be aware of whatever is happening. Such huge blasts can not only be fatal and leave people with lifelong injuries and organ damages but can also cause trauma and other mental and emotional disorders. People should be aware of how they make explosions in movies and how dangerous it could get.
