Taika Waititi Approached To Direct A Star Wars Film

Taika Waititi made his Star Wars directing debut on the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, well Lucasfilm must have liked working with him and what they have seen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lucasfilm has approached Waititi to develop a future Star Wars film. The trade states as of now, it is not known where discussions are at this point, and it’s currently unknown if this film is tied to the one Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is developing, which would make sense due to their prior working relationship on Thor: Ragnarok or if this is a new project altogether.

Waititi is a hot name in Hollywood as he received critical acclaim for his directing duties on the final episode of The Mandalorian as well as his voice work as IG-11. His latest film Jojo Rabbit, released in November through Disney-owned Fox Searchlight earned 6 Academy Award nominations. Waititi is wrapping up his latest film with Fox Searchlight, Next Goal Wins, before returning to Marvel to direct Thor: Love and Thunder. Waititi remains involved with Akira, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the classic anime, and is to tackle that after Thor. Any potential Star Wars undertaking could impact those plans.

The Mandalorian has seemed to be a nice platform for directors as Deborah Chow will takeover sole directing duties on the Obi-Wan series, and showrunner and producers Jon Favreau (another Marvel creative figure) and Dave Filoni are expected to take on a larger role overseeing the Star Wars universe moving forward, which includes series and films.

No other information is available on this project at this time.
